Sending Messages, Photos, and Files

Overview

Inside any conversation — direct or group — you can send text messages, take and share photos, and attach documents or videos. This article covers everything you can send and how to do it.

For how to open or create a conversation first, see → How to Start a Direct Message or → How to Create a Group Chat.

Sending a Text Message

Type your message in the input field at the bottom of the screen and tap the send button. Your message appears immediately in the conversation.

To notify a specific person in the conversation, type @ followed by their name. See → Mentioning Someone in a Chat.

Sharing a Photo

There are two ways to share a photo:

01

Take a photo with your camera

Tap the camera icon in the input bar. Your device camera opens — take the photo and it is sent directly to the conversation.

02

Upload from your gallery or files

Tap the attachment icon in the input bar. Your device file picker opens — select one or more files to send.

  • You can select multiple files at once.

Supported File Types and Size Limits

Files over the size limit will not send. The app shows a notification if a file exceeds the limit. Compress or resize the file and try again.

How Media Appears in the Conversation

Once sent, different file types display differently in the chat:

Images

Images appear as a preview directly in the message bubble. Tap any image to open it full screen — you can pinch to zoom in and use the download button to save it to your device.

Videos

Videos appear as a file card with a play icon. Tap the card to open the video player — you can play, pause, seek through the video, mute, and switch to fullscreen.

Documents

Documents appear as a file card showing the file type icon and the filename. Tap the download button on the card to save the file to your device.

Downloading Files

Tap the download button on any image or document card to save it to your device. Downloaded files are saved to your Downloads folder.

Downloaded files save to your device's default Downloads location. On Android, files go to the Downloads folder. On iOS, files are saved to the app's document storage and you can share them from there using the standard iOS share sheet.

In the main conversation list, the message preview shows a shorthand for media:

Things to Know

Images and files are uploaded before sending. When you select a file, it uploads to the server first, then appears in the conversation. On a slow connection, there may be a brief delay before the message appears.

There is no message editing or deletion. Once a message is sent, it cannot be edited or recalled. Double-check before sending, especially for files.
